“Walk & Talk” Sessions

We offer our clients the option of doing “walk & talk” sessions in which treatment will take place while walking as opposed to traditional psychotherapy & coaching sessions, which take place while seated in an office. Weather permitting, for those who are comfortable with the potential risk to their confidentiality, walking sessions may take place outside. Walking routes may include quiet residential streets in the Annex neighbourhood, the University of Toronto Campus, and along the Philosopher’s Walk. For those more concerned with confidentiality and/or on days when the weather is not pleasant, in-office “walk & talk” sessions will be offered on “walking pad” treadmills if desired.

What are the benefits of “walk & talk” as opposed to traditional, seated sessions?

Many people find sessions to be more enjoyable, and also note that it is easier to open-up while walking side-by-side as opposed to face-to-face while seated in an office. Exercise such as walking is associated with neurobiological and cardiovascular benefits that may reduce states of anxiety & depression, making it easier to address difficult topics that can be challenging to discuss. Walking may also facilitate creativity & flexibility of thought, which can aid in the therapy/coaching process. Some individuals, particularly those who struggle with ADHD, may also find it easier to focus for an hour while engaged in movement as opposed to sitting. Finally, many clients simply enjoy the opportunity to get some exercise in their day while we meet.

How do “walk & talk” sessions work?

If we are doing an outdoors session, we will meet in my office and leave together from the office. In an initial session, we will discuss with you the limits of your confidentiality while walking outdoors and we will discuss a plan should either of us bump into someone we know. Example walks include the annex neighbourhood, the University of Toronto Campus, and a few laps of the Philosopher’s Walk. You are welcome to suggest a different route if you would prefer. We will try to match your pace as we walk. We will be mindful of the time and ensure that we return to the office by the end of our session (or a few minutes before). In indoors sessions, we will walk towards one another on “walking pad” treadmills in my office. You will be given a remote control that will allow you to choose the speed with which you walk. You are welcome to, at any point, switch to a traditional seated session on the couch, if you would like, for any reason at all.

Can I switch between “walk & talk” and traditional office sessions?

You are welcome to switch back and forth between in-office and “walk & talk” sessions whenever you would like. You are also welcome to switch to a traditional seated session for any reason during a “walk & talk” session - i.e., even in the middle of a session, we can always return to the office/couch if you get tired, uncomfortable, etc.
